Now Gmail supports to add images in signatures. For that navigate to the Settings page, from there you can edit the signature for each account by changing the email address that appears in the drop down menu.Currently, only the latest desktop version of Gmail supports rich text signatures and multiple signatures.

Installing East Asian Languages on Win XP

Download and install the fonts that are given bellow

First insert your windows xp CD, Install East Asian language support in Windows XP by clicking on Start | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | Languages tab | check the "Install files for East Asian languages" box | Apply | OK. Then check the first one (if not check already) option "Install files for the complex script and right-to-left languages (including thai)" | Apply, OK| If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. If you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart it anyway by clicking on Start | Shut Down | Restart.

Rename a Series of Files

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.
2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.
3.On the File menu, click Rename.
4.Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type. For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on. To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type. For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

Using Remote Desktop

You must first enable the Remote Desktop feature on your office computer so that you can control it remotely from another computer. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to enable Remote Desktop on your Windows XP Professional-based computer.

To setup your office computer to use Remote Desktop:

* Open the System folder in Control Panel. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon.
* On the Remote tab, select the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box, as shown below.
* Ensure that you have the proper permissions to connect to your computer remotely, and click OK.
* Leave your computer running and connected to the company network with Internet access. Lock your computer, and leave your office.

The Remote Desktop Connection client software allows a computer running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 to control your Windows XP Professional computer remotely. The client software is available on the installation CD for Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. The client software is installed by default on computers running Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition.

To install Remote Desktop Connection software on a client computer

* Insert the Windows XP compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.
* When the Welcome page appears, click Perform additional tasks, and then click Setup Remote Desktop Connection as shown below.
* When the installation wizard starts, follow the directions that appear on your screen.

Once you have enabled your Windows XP Professional computer to allow remote connections, and installed client software on a Windows-based client computer, you are ready to start a Remote Desktop session.

To create a new Remote Desktop Connection

* Open Remote Desktop Connection. (Click Start, point to Programs or All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.)
* In Computer, type the computer name for your computer running Windows XP Professional that has Remote Desktop enabled and for which you have Remote Desktop permissions
* Click Connect.
* The Log On to Windows dialog box appears.
* In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type your user name, password, and domain (if required), and then click OK. The Remote Desktop window will open and you will see the desktop settings, files, and programs that are on your office computer. Your office computer will remain locked.
* Nobody will be able to work at your office computer without a password, nor will anyone see the work you are doing on your office computer remotely. Note: To change your connection settings, (such as screen size, automatic logon information, and performance options), click Options before you connect.

To open a saved connection

* In Windows Explorer, open the My DocumentsRemote Desktops folder.
* Click the .Rdp file for the connection you want to open. Note: A Remote Desktop file (.rdp) file contains all of the information for a connection to a remote computer, including the Options settings that were configured when the file was saved. You can customize any number of .rdp files, including files for connecting to the same computer with different settings. For example, you can save a file that connects to MyComputer in full screen mode and another file that connects to the same computer in 800×600 screen size. By default, .rdp files are saved in the My DocumentsRemote Desktops folder. To edit an .rdp file and change the connections settings it contains, right-click the file and then click Edit.

To log off and end the session

* In the Remote Desktop Connection window, click Start, and then click Shut Down.
* The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
* In the drop-down menu, select Log Off , and then click OK.

Slow Shutdown

Some people have noticed that they are experiencing a really slow shutdown after installing Windows XP Home or Professional. Although this can be caused a number of ways, the most clear cut one so far is happening on systems with an NVidia card installed with the latest set of drivers. A service called NVIDIA Driver Helper Service is loading up on start up and for whatever reason doesn't shut itself down properly. The service isn't needed and can also increase the amount of memory available to your system. Here is how to disable it.

1: Go into your Control Panel
2: Select Administrative Tools and then click on Services
3: Right click on the file "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" and then select STOP.
4: To stop this loading up every time you boot up your PC Right click it again and select properties - then where the option "Startup Type" is shown - make sure it is set at Manual like I have shown in the image below.

Boot Defragment

A very important new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This basically means that all boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled but some upgrade users have reported that it isn't on their setup.

1. Start Regedit.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

3. Select Enable from the list on the right.
4. Right on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.

Create a Password Reset Disk

If you’re running Windows XP Professional as a local user in a workgroup environment, you can create a password reset disk to log onto your computer when you forget your password. To create the disk:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
2.Click your account name.
3.Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password.
4.Follow the directions in the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a password reset disk.
5.Store the disk in a secure location, because anyone using it can access your local user account.

Make your Folders Private

•Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
•If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
•Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
•Double-click your user folder.
•Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
•On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

Note

•To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
•This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
•When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.
•You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS For information about converting your drive to NTFS

Remove or Rename the Recycle Bin from the Desktop

If you don't use the Recycle Bin to store deleted files , you can get rid of its desktop icon all together.

As a precaution, if you have fear about registry, just copy the registry file "regedit.exe" from "C:\Windows\" folder and past anywhere of your place.

Run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ Microsoft/ Windows/CurrentVersion/explorer/ Desktop/NameSpace

Then search for the string value "Recyclebin".

Click on the "Recycle Bin" string in the right hand pane. Hit Del, click OK.

If you want to restore, just copy the registry file from your folder where you saved before and past to "C:\Windows\". then restart the computer.

How to Rename the Recycle Bin

To change the name of the Recycle Bin desktop icon, open Regedit and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Restricting Logon Access in Win 98/95

If you work in a multiuser computing environment, and you have full (administrator level) access to your computer, you might want to restrict unauthorized access to your "sensitive" files under Windows 95/98.
One way is to disable the Cancel button in the Logon dialog box.
Just run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Network/Logon

Create the "Logon" subkey if it is not present on your machine: highlight the Network key -> right-click in the left hand Regedit pane -> select New -> Key -> name it "Logon" (no quotes) -> press Enter. Then add/modify a DWORD value and call it "MustBeValidated" (don't type the quotes). Double-click it, check the Decimal box and type 1 for value.
Now click the Start button -> Shut Down (Log off UserName) -> Log on as a different user, and you'll notice that the Logon Cancel button has been disabled.

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry [Start>Run then type "regedit" then press enter] and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it.

As a precaution, if you have fear about registry, just copy the registry file "regedit.exe" from "C:\Windows\" folder and past anywhere of your place.

This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

Surf the Web: Decoding Error Messages

As you surf the Net, you will undoubtedly find that at times you can't access certain websites. Why, you make wonder? Error messages attempt to explain the reason for that and other problems. Unfortunately, these cryptic messages baffle most people. We've deciphered the most common ones:

400 - Bad Request

Problem: There's something wrong with the address you entered. You may not be authorized to access the web page, or maybe it no longer exists.

Solution: Check the address carefully, especially if the address is long. Make sure that the slashes are correct (they should be forward slashes) and that all the names are properly spelled. Web addresses are case sensitive, so check that the names are capitalized in your entry as they are in the original reference to the website.

401 - Unauthorized

Problem: You can't access a website because you're not on the guest list, your password is invalid or you have entered your password incorrectly.

Solution: If you think you have authorization, try typing your password again. Remember that passwords are case sensitive.

403 - Forbidden

Problem: Essentially the same as a 401.

Solution: Try entering your password again or move on to another site.

404 - Not Found

Problem: Either the web page no longer exists on the server or it is nowhere to be found.

Solution: Check the address carefully and try entering it again. You might also see if the site has a search engine. If so, use it to hunt for the document. (It's not uncommon for pages to change their addresses when a website is redesigned.) To get to the home page of the site, delete everything after the domain name and hit the Enter or Return key. For example, if the address is:
http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/email.htm
remove English/html/email.htm.

503 - Service unavailable

Problem: Your Internet service provider (ISP) or your Internet connection may be down.

Solution: Take a stretch, wait a few minutes and try again. If you still have no luck, phone your ISP or system administrator.

Bad file request

Problem: Your web browser may not be able to decipher the online form you want to access. There may also be a technical error in the form.

Solution: Consider sending a message to the site's webmaster, providing any technical information you can, such as the browser and version you use.

Connection refused by host

Problem: You don't have permission to access the page or your password is incorrect.

Solution: Try retyping your password if you think you should have access.

Failed DNS lookup

Problem: DNS stands for the Domain Name System, which is the system that looks up the name of a website, finds a corresponding number (similar to a phone number), then directs your request to the appropriate web server on the Internet. When the lookup fails, the host server can't be located.

Solution: Try clicking on the Reload or Refresh button on your browser toolbar. If this doesn't work, check the address and enter it again. If all else fails, try again later.

File contains no data

Problem: The site has no web pages on it.

Solution: Check the address and enter it again. If you get the same error message, try again later.

Host unavailable

Problem: The web server is down.

Solution: Try clicking on the Reload or Refresh button. If this doesn't work, try again later.

Host unknown

Problem: The web server is down, the site may have moved, or you've been disconnected from the Net.

Solution: Try clicking on the Reload or Refresh button and check to see that you are still online. If this fails, try using a search engine to find the site. It may have a new address.

Network connection refused by the server

Problem: The web server is busy.

Solution: Try again in a while.

Unable to locate host

Problem: The web server is down or you've been disconnected from the Net.

Solution: Try clicking on the Reload or Refresh button and check to see that you are still online.

Unable to locate server

Problem: The web server is out-of-business or you may have entered the address incorrectly.

Solution: Check the address and try typing it again.

Are you bothered with Autorun virus?

Step 1:

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE AUTORUN VIRUS ON YOUR SYSTEM?

Go to windows explorer or my computer

Right-click on your drive(s) you will see these Chinese or sort of a thing "xioxex"

To reconfirm

Go to tools, folder options

Click on the view tab

Select show hidden files and folders

Uncheck hide protected operating system files (recommended)

Select Apply and OK

Check your drive(s)

The presence of Autorun.vbs and other sorts of Autorun shows that there is a virus on the system.

These viruses when left for a long time will disable your folder options, Run, Registry, Msconfig and ends up deleting or corrupting your document or files.

Step 2:

HOW DO YOU DISABLE THESE VIRUSES FROM REPLICATING?

Select start menu

Click on run and type regedit click ok

Select edit menu and click on find

Type userinit, check "match whole string only", click find next

Double click on the userinit

Delete Autorun.bat only

Close Registry

You had just disable the virus from running each time you boot your system.

NOTE: if you cannot enter your registry that means the virus has deactivated it so you have to go to safe mode and repeat step 2

Step 3

HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE AUTORUN VIRUS?

Now you have to restart you computer

When restarting go to safe mode by pressing F8

When fully booted

Select start menu, click Run

Type cmd, select OK

Type cd\ press enter

Type Attrib –a –s –h –r and press enter

Take note of the spaces in between the command and dashes

Type dir and press enter

You will see all the Autorun viruses and this is what you do.

Type del Autorun.* and press enter follow the same step for all drives that are infected.

Type exit and press enter

Now restart your computer in a normal mode and check you computer again using step 1 and all the viruses are gone….

When Some Specific Websites Do Not Open On Your Computer

Your computer is connected to the Internet and you can reach most websites just fine but there’s a problem when you try to open some particular website(s).

Though that website is unreachable from your computer, it is definitely not down because you are able to access the same website from another computer at home.

Facing a similar problem ? Here’s how to diagnose and fix the issue:

Fix 1: Check your Windows HOSTS file - Make sure there’s no entry in the hosts file that maps the website’s address to localhost or an incorrect IP address like 127.0.0.1 - it is a possibility if you have imported some third-party hosts file.

cmd /k notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32 \drivers\ etc\hosts

Fix 2: Find Faults in the Pipeline - Paypal website may be up and running but it is possible that the real problem lies with a router that is between you and the computer hosting the Paypal website. Do a traceroute and check for messages like “Request Timed Out” - they will help you find the location of the breakdown. Type the following command in the Run Window: cmd /k tracert www.paypal.com - remember to replace Paypal with address of the website that is unreachable.

Fix 3: Clear DNS Cache - The DNS cache keeps a record of sites that you have recently visited on your computer. If that gets corrupted, you may have issues opening sites that were previously accessible without problems.

Type cmd /k ipconfig /displaydns in the Run window to see the cache entries. If that unreachable website is listed in the cache, type cmd /k ipconfig /flushdns to clear the cache.

Fix 4: Website May Be Blocked - The chances are rare but it is possible that access to some particular website may be have been restricted by the Office firewall. Tutorial

To convert your PowerPoint presentation to flash, follow these steps:

STEP ONE
1. Select ‘Import’ option via File menu; OR click on the quick icon for ‘Import’ in the toolbar.

2. The ‘Import Files’ window opens up.

3. You have two options here. You can either import a single file by clicking on ‘Select file’ button; OR you can import multiple files saved in a folder by hitting the button marked ‘Select folder’.
4. You can now see the list of the presentation( s) that you have selected to convert.

5. Check out the location where your flash files will be saved by default. Click on the button marked ‘Change’, and browse to select a different location to save your flash files.
6. Click on ‘Import Now’ button.
7. The conversion process starts, and the progress bar displays the conversion status.

8. Once your presentation is fully converted, you can view the status ‘Complete’ in the column headed as ‘Status’.
9. To convert more presentation( s), click on the button marked ‘Import More’.
10. Once you are done with the conversion process, you can click on ‘Close’.
11. You can now see the converted presentation in the output list on the main window.

STEP TWO Control how your presentation looks

authorPOINT Lite gives you a complete control over the look and feel of the output. You can personalize and customize the output; and also make some default quality- and compression settings that best fit your requirements. All you need to do is
Select ‘Options’ via Tools menu.

The ‘Options’ window opens up displaying the following three tabs:

1. Profile Tab: The Profile tab lets you create your profile so that you can personalize your output. Here you can create multiple profiles, add your personal image, and display your logo too.
2. Templates Tab: The Template tab gives you a variety of options to select the layout and the color of the output according to your preference
3. Settings Tab: The Settings tab allows you to make some default quality- and conversion settings for your output.

Profile Tab:

1. To create a new profile, hit the button marked ‘New’ (below in the window).
2. The ‘New Profile Name’ window pops up.

* Enter the name of the profile you intend to create.
* Click on ‘Ok’

3. Enter a title that signifies your role or position in the presentation.
4. Enter your Name, Organization, and the Email address.
5. You can add your image and logo by clicking on the ‘Add Presenter’s Image’ and ‘Add Presenter’s Logo’ respectively.
6. To mark the current profile as the default profile for the subsequent presentations, click on the ‘Set as Default’ button.
7. Click on ‘Ok’.
8. To delete a profile, you can select the profile from the drop down menu in ‘Profile Name’ field, and click on the button marked ‘Delete’.

Template Tab:

The templates tab opens up displaying a variety of choices for you so that you can effortlessly customize the look and feel of the output.

1. The ‘Select Color’ field offers a range of six colors (Blue, Brown, Dark Green, Green, Purple, and Silver) for you to choose. Select the color of your preference from the drop down menu.
2. Select the preferred layout from the ‘Select Layout’ field. Here you have three layouts available. These are E-learning Standard, E-learning Compact, and Trade Show.
3. To mark the selected layout and color as default template for the subsequent presentations, click on the button marked ‘Set as Default’.
4. Click on the button marked ‘Ok’.

Settings Tab:

1. You can see a slider in the ‘Image Quality’ field. This slider depicts the image quality level, with higher quality towards right. Adjacent to it is a selection box wherein you can select the preferred level of image quality. As you make your choice, the Image quality slider gets adjusted accordingly, and vice-versa.
2. Go to ‘Audio Quality’ field. You have five quality parameters available in a drop down menu ranging from Very High to Very Low. Select the preferred level of audio from the drop down menu made available there. The selection that you make here goes for all the converted presentations.
3. Choose from two options available in ‘Narrations/ Rehearse timings’ field. These are

* ‘Use if found’, that is use Narrations/ Rehearse timings as they are in the original PowerPoint’ and
* ‘Do no use’ that is do not use Narrations/ Rehearse timings included in the original PowerPoint

This ensures that authorPOINT Lite keeps/discards (as per your choice) the rehearse timings/ narrations of all the presentations that are converted into flash and show the same in the output.

4. Check the checkbox in ‘Speaker Notes’ field. It ensures that all the presentations that are converted subsequently show speaker notes in the output.
5. The ‘Default Location for Presentations’ field displays the default location wherein your presentations will be saved.
a. To change the same, click on the button marked ‘Change’.
b. The ‘Browse for Folder’ window opens up. Select the preferred location and click on ‘Ok’.
c. The selected location will now be displayed in the ‘Default Location for Presentations’ field.
STEP THREE Edit the Flash Output

Once a presentation is successfully converted, you can change certain things about your flash output such as audio and image quality, the presenter's profile and the template for look and feel.

To edit the details of the output, follow the steps below:

1. Select the presentation to be edited from thumbnails list. The selected presentation opens up in the ‘Slide View’ window.

2. The ‘Slide view’ window displays the slide thumbnails at the bottom and the slide view in the upper section. The Left section of the Slide View window lets you edit the title and notes of a slide by clicking on the links marked ‘Edit Slide Title’ and ‘Edit Notes’ respectively.

3. The right-side section of ‘Slide View’ window displays the presentation’ s details. It has three icons at the bottom.

a. Clicking on the first icon opens up the ‘Presentation Details’ tab. You can add/edit the description and the keyword of the presentation.

b. When you click on middle icon, the ‘Presenter Information’ tab opens up populated by the default presenter info that you entered through the ‘Options’ window. The changes that you make here will be specific to the selected presentation.

i. You can select a different profile from ‘Profile Name’ page; or
ii. Open up ‘Profile’ tab in Options window by clicking on the link marked ‘Edit Profile’. You can create a new profile therein or even edit the default profile’s info.

c. The third icon stands for ‘Presentation’ s Settings’ tab. The ‘Settings’ tab opens up displaying the default settings from the ‘Options’ window. Remember the changes here will be presentation specific.

* Set the quality level for images and audio used in the presentation.
* Select if you need the embedded narrations or rehearse timings of the presentation.
* Check the checkbox in the ‘Speaker Notes’ field if you need speaker notes of the presentation in the output.
* You can customize the output by select the template layout and the color.

4. Click on the button marked ‘Save’ in the toolbar to save the changes.

- VideoDownloader Extension for Firefox
- MediaCoder (I use 0.5.0)

Instructions:
1) Download and install all of the free tools listed above.

2) Goto a site (such as Youtube, MySpace, GoogleVideo, iFilm, etc.

3) Search and find a video you would like to keep.

4) Click the VideoDownloader Button in the bottom right part of your Firefox Browser window.

5) A window will pop-up. Click the button that says 'Download Link.'

6) Click 'Save to Disk' and then click 'OK' in the 'Downloads' window.

***NOTE: If the file you download does not have the extension .flv, then rename the file and end the name with .flv***

7) Start up MediaCoder

8) Drag and Drop the .flv file(s) into the large white area

9) Click the 'Video' tab in the lower left-hand section on the window and select 'XviD' in the 'Format' drop-down menu.
10) Click the large 'Start' button (third from the right at the top of the window) to begin transcoding the video(s).

11) Once a window pops up saying that the transcoding has completed, then you are done!

Launch System Restore from a command prompt in Windows XP

If your Windows XP system begins acting strange, a typical fix is to use System Restore to remove any system changes made since the last time you created a Restore Point. However, what if the problem is so bad that you can't start Windows XP normally—or even start the system in Safe Mode?

The good news is you can run System Restore from a command prompt. Here's how:

1. Restart your computer and press [F8] during the initial startup.
2. When you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu, select the Safe Mode With A Command Prompt option.
3. Select the Windows XP operating system.
4. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

5. Type the following command at a command prompt:

C:\windows\system32 \restore\ rstrui.exe

When you see the System Restore window, the graphics may look odd, but you can still follow the onscreen instructions to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Keep track of multiple Windows XP computers with BGInfo

Do you regularly work with multiple computers using a Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) switch? If so, you know that it's easy to get confused about which computer you currently have on the screen. Of course, you can find out on your own, but doing so takes several steps and can be distracting—especially if you're in the middle of an important or lengthy task.

Fortunately, there's a solution in a program called BGInfo, which is short for Background Information. When Microsoft acquired Sysinternals, it also acquired a whole library of cool little utilities that fall along the lines of Microsoft's own PowerToys, and BGInfo is one of them.

Once installed, BGInfo displays relevant information about a computer on the desktop's background. For example, you can configure BGInfo to display the computer name, IP address, service pack version, boot time, amount of free space, and much more. You can even choose the font and background color.

You can download BGInfo from Microsoft's TechNet site. You'll also find detailed instructions on how to install and use BGInfo.

Use either the Print Report or Export Data command on the File menu to create a permanent record of the duplicate files.

Use the Sort command on the View menu to reorganize the list for better analysis.

To get more detailed information about any file, select the file, pull down the File menu, and select the Info command.

Leave duplicate files in the Windows folder and its subfolders alone.

If you don't recognize the duplicate file, it's better to use the Rename or Move commands on the File menu rather than the Delete command.

Launch Windows Explorer with administrative privileges on Windows XP Pro

Do you ever need to perform an on-the-fly administrative task when you're not on your computer? If the computer runs Internet Explorer 6 or 7, you can launch Windows Explorer with administrative privileges on a Windows XP Pro limited user machine.

Note: This tip applies only to Windows XP Professional

When you're working on a user's computer and need to perform an administrative task from within his or her Windows XP Pro limited user account, you can use the Run As command to launch certain utilities with administrative account privileges.

However, if you try to use Run As to launch Windows Explorer with administrative privileges, nothing happens. This is because Explorer.exe is already running and only one instance of Explorer can run at a time. More specifically, when you launch Explorer.exe, the first thing it does is check to see whether it is already running. When the second instance of Explorer.exe sees that the first instance of Explorer.exe is running, the second instance of Explorer.exe closes without any outward notification. Here's how you can work around it.

Internet Explorer 6

Internet Explorer 6 will work with Run As and will allow you to tap into Windows Explorer. Here's how:

1. Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Quick Launch toolbar and choose Run As. (Keep in mind that you can't access Run As from the Internet Explorer icon that appears on the desktop or on the Start menu.)

2. Fill in the appropriate administrative account credentials in the Run As dialog box.

3. When Internet Explorer launches, type C:\ in the Address bar.

After you follow these steps, Windows Explorer will appear in the same window, and it will be running with administrative privileges.

Internet Explorer 7

If you're using Internet Explorer 7, the steps for Internet Explorer 6 won't work because, as part of the new security features in version 7, Internet Explorer is no longer integrated with Windows Explorer. You must use the standard method for launching Windows Explorer with administrative privileges. Here's how:

1. Log on to the computer with the Administrator account.

2. Access the Control Panel and launch Folder Options.

3. When you see the Folder Options dialog box, select the View tab.

4. Scroll down the Advanced Settings list and select the Launch Folder Windows In A Separate Process check box, click OK, and then log off.

The next time you work on that user's computer and need to perform an administrative task from within the limited user account, you can use Run As to launch Windows Explorer with administrative privileges.

If you're like most IT professionals, you probably use the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tool called RoboCopy with Windows XP. RoboCopy is an extremely powerful copy tool that allows you to perform more advanced copy operations than you can with Windows XP's standard copy tools. For example, with RoboCopy, you can create mirror images of large folder tree structures on the same computer or on a network drive.

The only drawback to using RoboCopy is that you have to run it from the command line. This means that to use RoboCopy, you have to remember and type a lot of switches and parameters to really take advantage of all its features.

Fortunately, Derk Benisch, a systems engineer with Microsoft's MSN Search group, created an add-in called RoboCopy GUI. This six-tabbed user interface makes configuring and using RoboCopy a real snap. Not only does the interface provide you with a large set of configuration options via check boxes, radio buttons, text boxes, and Browse dialog boxes, but it also can save your settings, which makes reusing the tool that much easier. Furthermore, RoboCopy GUI comes with a Help file and an extensive reference guide to help you get a handle on all that RoboCopy can do.

Take advantage of the Windows XP Start menu's pinned items list

The left panel of the Start menu consists entirely of a divided list of programs that Windows XP thinks will come in handy for you: the pinned items list above the separator line and the most frequently used programs list, displayed below the line.

By default, Windows XP places links to your Internet browser and your e-mail application in the pinned items list and will place as many as 30 shortcuts to the programs you've recently used in the most frequently used programs list. (The most frequently used programs list is, by default, six shortcuts long.)

To really take advantage of the Start menu as a launching area for all the programs you use most often, you can configure the entire left panel as a pinned items list. Here's how:

1. Right-click the Start button and select the Properties command to display the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box.

2. Click the Customize button adjacent to the Start Menu radio button to display the Customize Start Menu dialog box.

3. In the Programs panel, use the Spin button to set the Number Of Programs On The Start Menu setting to 0. Click the Clear List button.

4. In the Show On Start Menu panel, you can clear the Internet check box because the Internet Explorer icon already appears in the Quick Launch menu by default, and maybe even the E-mail check box, depending on how you launch your e-mail application.

5. Click OK twice—once to close the Customize Start Menu dialog box and once to close the Taskbar And Start Menu Properties dialog box.

6. Click the Start button and access the All Programs submenu.

7. Locate and right-click on the shortcut to a program you use often and select the Pin To Start Menu command.

You can pin as many as 30 of your most often used programs to the Start menu, depending on your screen resolution setting. With your actual favorite programs on the pinned items list, you can now really take advantage of the Start menu.

Investigate Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP

You're probably familiar with Start's left-hand menu—but do you know why the program list is divided in two? Here's what you need to know about the pinned items list found in Windows XP and how you can customize it to easily access your favorite programs.

When you visit various Web sites, your Windows XP computer may download add-ons—usually ActiveX controls designed to enhance your use of that particular site. Add-ons can include toolbars, software installers, and multimedia file viewers. However, some add-ons may be spyware, which could have devastating effects on Windows XP's performance. So it's worth your time to periodically investigate add-ons in Internet Explorer to make sure that they are all legitimate

Here's how:

1. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools | Manage Add-ons.

2. In the Manage Add-ons dialog box, make sure the Show drop-down is set to Add-ons That Have Been Used By Internet Explorer.

3. Scan through the list and take note of each add-on's name, publisher, status, type, and file.

4. If you discover an add-on you do not recognize, select it and then select the Disable option. Click OK.

5. Point your browser to your favorite search engine and search for the add-on's name to see what you can learn about its origins. If you discover that it is indeed a legitimate add-on, simply return to the Manage Add-ons dialog box and re-enable the add-on.

If you plug a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port, Windows XP will display a warning message indicating that it will drop back to the slower data transfer speed. (USB 2.0 clocks in with a data transfer speed of 480 Mbits/second to USB 1.1's 12 Mbits/second. ) To find out what version of USB controller is on a computer before you connect a USB device to it, follow these steps:

1. Press [Windows][Break] to access the System Properties dialog box.

2. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.

3. When Device Manager appears, click the + sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch.

If you see an entry containing the words Enhanced USB Controller, the system has a USB 2.0 controller. If you see an entry containing the words USB Controller, the system has a USB 1.1 controller

If you regularly use the Run command to launch applications, you know that Windows XP keeps a record in the registry, called the MRU (most recently used) list, of all the applications you recently launched. When you have the Run dialog box open, you can access the MRU list by clicking the drop-down arrow adjacent to the Open text box.

The MRU list is designed to make it easier for you to relaunch the same applications at a later date. However, this list can grow quite long, making it difficult to find what you want.

Fortunately, you can create a registry shortcut that clears the Run command's MRU list. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) .

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentV ersion\Explorer\ RunMRU.

3. Right-click on the RunMRU key and select Export.

4. Name the REG file Clear Run MRU, click the Save button, and close the Registry Editor.

5. Open the Clear Run MRU.reg file in Notepad.

6. Add a minus sign to the beginning of the key name just inside the square brackets.

7. Delete all lines that follow the line containing the key path.

8. Save the file and close Notepad.

9. Reboot Windows (or at least log off and then log back on) for this change to become effective. Now, any time you want to clear the Run command's MRU list, simply locate and double-click on the Clear Run MRU.reg file. When you do so, the Registry Editor will display two dialog boxes: one that prompts you to confirm the operation and the other to let you know the operation was successful

How to Speed Up Windows Boot Time

There are a variety of factors (both hardware and software) involved in lowering the amount of time it takes for Windows to load. All of these changes are optional, and do not need to be carried out. Instead, they are offered as suggestions to try to lower the time it takes for Windows to boot. Some of these changes are very advanced and should only be attempted if you are comfortable with making the changes and have your data backed up.

System BIOS Changes

One of the first places to help speed boot time in Windows is to make some simple changes to the system BIOS. The BIOS or Basic Input/Output System is a set of instructions and commands built into the motherboard that allows the computer to know what type of hardware is connected and how to communicate with that hardware. You'll first have to gain access to the BIOS setup screen to make any changes. Do not make changes to the system settings in the BIOS lightly, one mistake can render the computer unbootable and cause more problems than its worth. For this reason, do not attempt making changes to the system BIOS unless you are willing to accept the risk along with it. With that said, you'll want to follow the directions below and make some simple changes to speed up the boot process.

1) You must start with the computer completely off, not in sleep or hibernation mode. Then turn the computer on.

2) Enter the system BIOS screen by the manufacturers suggestion. Depending on the computer, this may involve pressing the DEL key, pressing F1, Pressing F10, holding down CTRL-ALT-S, or a variety of other keystrokes to get to the BIOS screen. 3) Once in the BIOS setup, look for a BOOT menu and select it with your keyboard arrow keys, Tab, and Enter.
4) In most modern BIOS screens, you'll find an option for Quick Boot. Enable this to skip memory tests and other minor Power On Self Tests (POST).

5) Find an option for Boot Device Priority next, and change the first boot device to be the hard drive. Changing this option will speed up the boot process, but it will also not allow the computer to boot from a floppy disk or CD-ROM. If booting from anything other than the hard drive is important to you, please skip this step. If later on, you need to boot from a CD-ROM, simply re-enter the BIOS setup and make the CD-ROM the first boot device.

6) Choose the option to Exit and Save Changes and the computer will reboot.

There are other options in the BIOS to speed up boot time such as choosing the exact settings for your hard drive, and disabling AUTO DETECT of hard drives and other media. However I am skipping those changes and leaving them for a later discussion.

Changes to Windows Settings

The next group of changes to consider will be to the many Windows settings. We will use a handy tool called the System Configuration Utility to accomplish most of these changes. Follow the steps below to open and use this tool.

Startup Tab Changes

1) Click on Start, Run and type MSCONFIG and press Enter

2) Click on the STARTUP tab in the System Configuration Utility to view all the items that begin on Startup. An example is shown below.

Each item on the Startup tab that is checked loads immediately after Windows starts. If there are lots of items here, this will slow down the boot time for Windows considerably. Each of these items can be toggled on or off simply by using the checkmark box to the left of the item.

The column directly to right of the checkmark is the Name of the program, while the next column over is the location on the hard drive or other device of the file. Finally the last column shows where in the computer the file is started from. This location could be in the registry as is the case with all the locations that begin with HKLM or HKCU, or it could be in the Windows Startup folder found under ALL PROGRAMS in Windows XP.

You can examine each of these startup items and uncheck any that are not necessary. How do you know which ones are not necessary? Well, in most computer configurations, you'll want drivers running for your graphics or video controller and sound card, and most likely an antivirus and firewall running. Other startup items are usually extras that could be eliminated from boot up. To discover what a particular item is used for, jot down the name for the item and go over to a site called Process Library, type in the name of the process and click Find. This is a very handy tool for discovering which startup items are truly needed.

When you are done modifying the checkmarks to the Startup tab, click OK and you'll be asked to reboot the system.

Windows Services Changes

Once the computer is rebooted, click on Start, Run and type MSCONFIG and press Enter again. This will reopen the System Configuration Utility. Click on the Services tab, then click on the option at the bottom called "Hide All Microsoft Services" to see what unnecessary Windows services are running that can be removed. Generally speaking, you want services related to your video/sound cards and antivirus or firewall programs left running. Other services may not be essential and can be removed. Remember to only remove unessential services or you risk experiencing boot problems. Use Google to search for information on unfamiliar services. Another good resource is Black Viper's Strange Services page.

Hardware Changes to Increase Boot Time

Adding more Memory (RAM)

Other than upgrading the motherboard and CPU, you can generally increase the amount of RAM in your computer to make it load programs and applications faster and provide a more enjoyable computing experience. You'll want to check your motherboard to make sure you have available slots and the maximum amount of RAM you can add to your particular motherboard.

Replacing your Hard Drive with a Faster RPM Drive

If you have a slower hard drive such as a 5400 RPM or slower, you may want to consider upgrading to a faster 7200 RPM
hard drive. The difference in RPM speed will generally be quite noticeable.

Changing to Static IP

If your computer is connected to a local area network that you control and you have a DHCP server enabled on your router, during the boot process the computer queries the network to valid IP address. You can shave seconds off your boot time by assigning a valid IP address to your computer instead of using DHCP to assign it. To setup a Static IP for your computer, follow these directions.

1) Click on Start, Run
2) Type NCPA.CPL and press Enter to open the Network Connection Control Panel
3) Right-click on the Local Area Connection and choose Properties
4) Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties
5) You should see a screen similar to the one below. Fill in your static IP, subnet, default gateway, and DNS server information and click OK. If you aren't sure of your IP ranges on your router, consult your router manual or a friend that is more knowledgeable in networking terminology. Again, this is an optional item and does not necessarily need to be accomplished. Using DHCP is fine, although you sacrifice a few seconds for an IP to be assigned to from the network.

Switching from Master/Slave to Cable Select

Changing the configuration on the hard drive from Master to Cable Select reduced the boot time on this particular machine by 2 minutes.

Other Windows Performance Tips

Reduce the Number of Fonts installed

Every font that is installed in Windows has to load when Windows starts. The more fonts you have installed, the slower Windows loads. Although you can safely have around 1000 fonts loaded in Windows, I like to keep my font list closer to 300-500 or fewer if possible. There are certain fonts that are definitely required by Windows, so be careful in removing any fonts from your computer unless you know they are not needed. Fonts such as Verdana,Arial, Trebuchet, Tahoma, Tahoma, Times New Roman, MS Sans Serif, and Courier New should be left on your system. Follow the directions below to remove extra fonts from Windows XP.

1) Open My Computer
2) Double-click on Drive C
3) Click on File, New Folder and title it Fonts Backup
4) Double-click on the Windows folder to open it
5) Double-click on the Fonts folder
6) Highlight the fonts you wish to remove, click on Edit and choose COPY
7) Navigate back to the C:\Fonts Backup folder and PASTE these fonts into your backup folder
8) Return to the Fonts Folder and right-click on any fonts you previously copied to the backup folder, then choose Delete.

If you accidentally removed a font, simply reverse the procedure by copying and pasting the font back into the Windows\Fonts folder.

Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and Defrag

Performing regular hard drive maintenance on your computer every few months will not only catch problems before they cause serious damage but also make your hard drive run at its optimal level. Follow these instructions to clean up the drive and defrag it.

1) Open My Computer
2) Right-click on the hard drive usually Drive C
3) Click on the Tools tab
4) Under Error Checking, click on Check Now. Optionally, you may want to check the boxes to "Automatically Fix File Errors" and "Scan For and Attempt Recovery for Bad Sectors"
5) Next, click on the General tab and click on Disk Cleanup. After the computer calculates the amount of files to remove, place a checkmark next to the type of files you wish to remove and click Ok. Read the descriptions for each type of file to determine if you should delete it.
6) Finally, click on the Tools tab again and under Defragmentation click Defragment Now
7) Click on the hard drive you wish to defrag, click on Analyze and then click on Defragment. This process may take some time to complete.

Using a Different Antivirus, Firewall, or AntiSpyware Program

If your computer is still running slow after changing and checking all of these options, it might be time to use a different program for antivirus, firewall, or antispyware security. A blog on the net called The PC Spy has a graph displaying the boot delay time from most of the popular products on the market including Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, ZoneAlarm, and more.

Not surprisingly, Symantec's Internet Security products top the list with a 40+ % boot delay, followed by Panda Antivirus, and Zone Alarm. So, while these products may help prevent infections and attacks, they also are contributing greatly to the slowdown your computer is experiencing. Avast, AVG, NOD32, and others perform much better according to this chart.

Tips or Myths

There are other miscellanous tips on the web that may help speed up the Windows boot time, but there are also some very controversial ones.

Emptying the Windows Prefetch Folder

The Prefetch folder found at C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH is often a source of controversy concerning its effect on boot time. This folder preloads some applications to enable faster opening of the most used programs. There are tips on the web that point to changing a registry value or emptying the prefetch folder will improve boot time. From my experience, deleting the contents of the prefetch folder DOES NOT improve boot time and only slows the time required to open programs. There is a limit to how many items will be loaded into the folder so it doesn't get overloaded, so why would anyone empty this folder when its purpose is to speed up loading of applications. Disable the Windows Boot Logo

Many sites recommend disabling the animated Windows boot logo to help speed up the time it takes to boot. Although it may decrease the time by a couple seconds, the anxiety caused by facing a blank screen and wondering if Windows has stalled or froze during bootup outweighs the second or two you may save. Although if you wish to disable the Windows boot logo, follow these steps:

1) Click on Start, Run and type MSCONFIG and press Enter
2) Click on the BOOT.INI tab
3) Click the NOGUIBOOT checkbox and click OK
4) Reboot the computer

Using BootVis

When Windows XP first came out, Microsoft had a utility called BootVis, which was a performance tracing tool that Microsoft developed from software developers and system designers. It was used to identify performance issues while developing new PC products, but is no longer distributed. Microsoft states on their web page for BootVis

"Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system."

I personally have tried Bootvis and saw a couple seconds improvement on overall boot time, but nothing extreme in lowering overall bootup speed.

Master/Slave Settings

Now for a refresher course on hard drive connections. When connecting more than one hard drive to a computer on the same IDE controller, you generally have to assign one as the primary (master) and one as the secondary (slave). You do this by changing the jumpers on the hard drive next to the power connector. Normally, the drive will have a diagram to let you know which jumper should be set for a master drive and which to set for a slave drive. You'll notice in the picture below the jumpers are circled on the end of the drive and the top of the drive shows the diagram to follow.

After changing the jumpers, connect the hard drive cable from the motherboard to the hard drives. Under normal circumstances, the end of the drive cable attaches to the Master hard drive, while the inside connector on the cable connects to the Slave drive.

What About Cable Select?

Cable Select (CS) settings were designed to make it easier to connect hard drives because you didn't need to bother with setting the Master/Slave jumpers. You just connect the drives and depending on where you connected them to the cable the computer would know which is Master and which is Slave...in theory. Now comes the confusing part.

With cable select, you first needed a special 40 conductor IDE cable that would determine master/slave connections. This was different from the normal IDE cables at the time. Also, the Master connector on CS cables was the inside connector not the end connector. This made for a very confusing switch from everyday master/slave configurations.

80 conductor Ultra DMA cables WILL determine the Master/Slave settings through Cable Select however. So as technology advances, Cable Select as a concept may still catch on. With the newer Ultra DMA cables, you can set both drives to Cable Select (CS), connect them and they will work. Another change with the 80 conductor cables, the Master connector is on the end of the cable where it should be. In situations where you are using a newer Ultra DMA drive and cable, you can use Cable Select or standard Master/Slave jumper settings and the drive will boot properly.

In my scenario to start this article, the change from Master/Slave to Cable Select for this particular computer reduced the Windows boot time by more than 2 minutes.

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Windows XP SP2 Limited or No Connectivity Error Message

"This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. "

Solutions to the problem are varied, however most of the solutions found on the web just mask the problem by simply guiding the user through turning off this notification. Now this solution may work great for systems that are showing a false positive error, but what if the system genuinely has lost its local area connection or the connection is unstable, what then?

One possible answer involves a bug in Service Pack 2 of Windows XP dealing with a loss of network connectivity for workstations that use Microsoft’s L2TP-based virtual private networking (VPN) client to connect to servers that are connected to NAT-based networks. However, this bug seems to appear in situations that are not associated with VPNs either.

If patching Windows XP for this bug does not fix the problem, read through the list below of other causes and fixes. You may have to reinstall yourfirewall, rebuild the configuration in your router, drop your connection speed from 100Mbps to 10Mbps, or assign static IP addresses to your computers in the network to resolve this issue.

How do I know if my system is affected by this bug?

If you have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and are experiencing any of the following symptoms, this bug is affecting your system.

· After installing Windows XP SP2, your network connection reports a problem with "Limited or No Connectivity"

· You have trouble connecting to the Internet or your local area network after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2.

· Your network connection gets stuck "Acquiring IP Address"

What Steps Can I Take to Fix This Problem?

If you are receiving this error, you should run the Microsoft patch (KB884020) for it. Follow the instructions below to do this. Alternatively, you can download a zip file with the patch, registry file.

1) Download the patch from Microsoft's site
2) Run the update to install it
3) Run this short Registry fix to complete the update. Type the following lines in Notepad and save the file as FixReg.reg on your desktop, then double click on it to install into your registry.

My Connection Works, Can I just disable the warning message?

If your local area connection is working properly and you simply want to disable the warning message follow these steps.

1) Open Control Panel
2) Open Network Connections and Right Click on the Local Area Connection and click on Properties
3) Uncheck the following option on the General Tab

"Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"

4) Click OK and close the Network Connections window

What If Installing this Patch Doesn't Help?
Other Causes For This Problem

If you are still experiencing this error message even after running the patch shown above, you may be experiencing one of several problems shown below:

1) Your Network or DSL router may have bad or missing information. Powercycle your router and/or rebuild the configuration in your router.

2) Double-check your cabling to the computer. Make sure you have the correct type of cabling, straight-through CAT 5 or possibly a crossover cable and try another cable or test the cable to make sure its working properly.

3) Check your network card to make sure its configured correctly and working properly. Many times setting the network card to 10Mbps/Full Duplex will solve this issue. To do this, open Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Go to the properties of the Network card, click on the Advanced tab and find the Link Speed and Duplex section. Change it from Auto Detect to 10Mbps/Full Duplex.

4) Check and test your firewall. Your firewall, especially if its a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, Black Ice, Norton Firewall or something else could be blocking the connection. Disable your firewall and test the connection. You may have to resolve the problem by even uninstalling and reinstalling the firewall.

5) Check your IP address assignments and workgroup settings in the computer for accuracy. Statically assign IPs to the computers in your network.

6) Reset your TCP/IP stack by downloading and running WinsockXPFix. exe a Visual Basic program designed to fix corrupted TCP/IP issues, host file problems and a variety of other connectivity issues.

Typing DOS commands on the Windows Command Line prompt is a most efficient and faster way of doing things in Windows XP. Here's a run-down of the most useful DOS commands available in Windows XP. Some of these DOS commands even do not have an visual alternative.

DOS Command-line tools must be run at the prompt of the Cmd.exe command interpreter. To open Command Prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

ipconfig - Windows IP configuration
Useful for troubleshooting your internet connection. Displays the current IP address of your computer and the DNS server address. If you call your ISP for reporting a bad internet connection, he will probably ask you to run ipconfig.

fc - Free BeyondCompare in XP
FC is an advanced DOS Command that compares two files and displays the differences between them. Though the file comparison results are not as interactive as BeyondCompare or Altova DiffDog, fc is still very useful. You can even set fc to resynchronize the files after finding a mismatch.

type - open text files sans Notepad
Similar to Unix cat command, Type is my favorite DOS command for displaying the contents of a text files without modifying them. When used in combination with more switch, type splits the contents of lengthy text files into multiple pages. Avoid using the type command with binary files or you'll hear alien PC beeps and see some greek characters on your PC.

ping - Say hello to another computer
Ping network command followed by the web-address or IP address tells you about the health of the connection and whether the other party is responding to your handshake request. Ping tool can also be used to convert the web address to a physical IP address.

tree - visual directory structure
You often need to take prints of your physical directory structure but XP has no simple "visual" commands for printing directory contents. Here, try the Tree DOS command and redirect the output to a text file.

tree > mydirectory. txt
print mydirectory. txt

attrib - make hidden files visible
Attrib lets you change attributes of System files and even hidden files. This is great for troubleshooting Windows XP. Say your XP doesn't boot ever since you edited that startup boot.ini file (Hidden), use attrib to remove the Hidden attibute and edit the file using EDIT dos command.

assoc - which program will open that .xyz file
The assoc DOS command can be used to either isplay or even modify the file name extension associations. The command assoc .htm will quickly tell you the name of your default web browser (see picture)

move - more flexible than copy-paste
Say you got a lot of XLS and DOC files in you MyDocuments folder and want to move only those XLS files that have their name ending with 2006. In XP Explorer, you have to manually select each file and then cut-paste to another folder. However, the DOS move command make things much simpler. Just type the following at the command prompt:
move *2006.xls c:\2006Reports\

find - advanced file search with filter
Find is the most powerful DOS command and even more useful than the Windows Desktop Search tool or the Windows Find Wizard. The find command searches for a specific string of text in a file or files. After searching the specified file or files, find displays any lines of text that contain the specified string.

To search your hard disk to find and display the file names on drive C: that contain the string "Google" use the pipe (|) to direct the results of a dir command to find as follows:
dir c:\ /s /b | find "Google"

Quick tip - Drag to avoid typing: When your command acts on a file or folder, you must type the path to that folder after the command. You can save typing time by dragging the file or folder from Windows Explorer into the command window.

How to Delete Undeletable Files in Windows

Many times when trying to remove an unwanted program, especially a piece of adware or spyware, you may run across a file that is undeletable by any normal method. When you try to remove it you'll receive the error message shown below telling you "access denied" and explaining the file may be in use. You may also receive one of the following messages.

Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

So if the file is in use, how do you delete it?

Manual Method

If you already know the path to the file, please skip to Step 7

1. Click on Start, Search, All Files and Folders
2. Type the name of the undeletable file in the box shown
3. Make sure the Look In box shows the correct drive letter
4. Click Search and let the computer find the file
5. Once the file is located, right-click on it and choose properties, make a note of the file location. Usually this is something similar to

c:\windows\system32 \undeleteablefil esname.exe
6. Close the search box
7. Click on Start, Run, and type CMD and Press Enter to open a Command Prompt window
8. Leave the Command Prompt window open, but proceed to close all other open programs
9. Click on Start, Run and type TASKMGR.EXE and press Enter to start Task Manager
10. Click on the Processes tab, click on the process named Explorer.exe and click on End Process.
11. Minimize Task Manager but leave it open
12. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory where the file is located. To do this, use the CD command. You can follow the example below.

Example: to change to the Windows\System32 directory you would enter the following command and Press Enter

cd \windows\system32
13. Now use the DEL command to delete the offending file. Type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.

Example: del undeletable. exe
14. Use ALT-TAB to go back to Task Manager
15. In Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the Windows shell.
16. Close Task Manager.

This is a nice extension that loads into the right click menu. All you have to do is right-click on a file and choose "Remove on Next Reboot" and the file will be deleted the next time the computer restarts. Although it probably should only be used by more advanced computer users since it may be TOO easy to delete files using this program.

Pocket Killbox

A simple .exe file that you can use to delete undeleteable files, although the program will also delete temporary files, edit the HOSTS file, and more. A definite must have program when you are fighting an annoying spyware or adware program that won't remove.

Unlocker

Unlocker is another program that runs from the right click menu. Its simple and very effective. The website even has a side by side comparision of other programs that accomplish this task.

Using one of the three tools shown above, you should be able to remove those annoying undeleteable files once and for all.

What is disk defragmentation?

Imagine you have important papers randomly scattered all over your desk—in order to find something, you have to go through the entire pile each time. If you took the time to organize them into files, you could quickly and easily find what you're looking for.

Computers tend to save changes to a file to the largest continuous space on the hard disk, which can often be in a different place than where other parts of the file are stored. Over time, your hard disk can become "fragmented," which means that your files are scattered in pieces across your hard disk. Every time you go to access a file, then, your computer must search the entire hard disk to find all the pieces related to that file.

Excessive fragmentation slows down your computer's response time, so it's a good idea to defragment your hard disk regularly.

Defragmentation sounds serious. Is it complicated?

Not at all. Regularly defragmenting your hard disk helps your PC access files more quickly and efficiently. Auto Creation of an Acronym List

There is no way to do this directly in Word. There are several types of tables you can create automatically, such as tables of contents, tables of authorities, and indexes. These last two tables (tables of authorities and indexes) could possibly be used to create the acronym list, but only if they are not already being added to your document and only if you don't mind your acronym list including page numbers.

If you want to use the table of authorities tool in order to create an acronym list, Shauna Kelly has put together a great article on how this can be done. The article specifically talks about glossaries, which essentially what an acronym list would be.

If you want to use the index tool in order to create your list, you can follow these general steps, assuming that the acronym, when defined, is followed by its meaning within parentheses:
1. Select the acronym and its meaning. This means that you find the first instance of the acronym in your document and then select that acronym along with the parenthetical meaning that follows it.
2. Press Alt+Shift+X to mark the selected text for the index.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other acronyms you want in your list.
4. At the end of your document, insert your index. You'll note that this approach leaves the parentheses in your index.
If you don't want the parentheses, then you'll need to go to each acronym that you marked and display the field code

Superscripted Registered Trademark Symbol

When you typing along in Word, you can create a registered trademark symbol (circled R) by typing (r). It is AutoCorrect that takes care of this change, but the resulting symbol is not superscripted.

You can easily correct this problem by simply changing the AutoCorrect entry to a formatted entry. Follow these steps:

Highlight the registered trademark symbol that is results when you type (r).

1. Press Ctrl+Shift++ (that's Ctrl, Shift, and the plus sign). The symbol is superscripted, and it should still be selected.
2. If you are using a version of Word prior to Word 2007, choose AutoCorrect Options from the Tools menu. Word displays the AutoCorrect tab of the AutoCorrect dialog box.
3. If you are using Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. At the left side of the dialog box click Proofing, and then click the AutoCorrect Options button. Word displays the AutoCorrect tab of the AutoCorrect dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)

4. In the Replace box, type (r). The With box should already be filled in with the registered trademark symbol if you had it selected in step 1. 5. Make sure the Formatted Text option is selected. 6. Click Replace. Word asks you if you want to replace the existing AutoCorrect definition. 7. Click Yes. The old definition is replaced. 8. Click OK to close the dialog box. Now, when you type (r), the characters will be replaced with a superscripted registered trademark symbol.

Spell Checking From the Keyboard

You may already know that you can right-click on a misspelled word and the resulting Context menu will display suggested corrections for your error. You may not want to use the mouse to activate this feature, however. You might not want to take your hands off the keyboard, which can slow down your editing. If you are of this ilk, there are two major ways you can display the Context menu for the misspelled word. In both instances, you must make sure the insertion point is somewhere in the misspelled word, then you can do either of the following:

If you have one of the 104-key Windows keyboards, press the "right-click key." This is the key next to the right Ctrl key. ·

Press Shift+F10.

Either of these methods results in the Context menu being displayed. You can then use the arrow keys to select a suggested spelling correction. Pressing Enter then makes the correction. If you don't see a suggestion you like, pressing the Esc key dismisses the Context menu

Another possible solution is to simply place the insertion point someplace before the misspelled word, and then press Alt+F7. This automatically selects the next misspelled word in the document and displays the Context menu with suggested alternatives.

Arranging Paragraphs

Sometimes you want to move a paragraph or two around in your document. For instance, you might want to move a paragraph from its current location to before the preceding paragraph. You can quickly move paragraphs by following these steps:

1. Position the insertion point in the paragraph you want to move.
2. While holding down the SHIFT and ALT keys, press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to move the paragraph.

Animated Menus

One of the ways in which Word attempts to add spice to life is through menu animation. Normally menu animation is turned off, but if you have some CPU cycles to spare, you may want to give it a try (as long as you are using Word 97 or a later version). Simply choose Customize from the Tools menu, and then click on the Options tab. The Menu Animations drop-down list has these possible settings:

None. This is the default; there is no menu animation. In Word 2002, this option is called "System Default." ·
Random. Results in a menu using the Unfold or Slide method, at random. ·
Unfold. The menu opens up from top to bottom and left to right. ·
Slide. The menu "slides" onto the screen, progressing from top to bottom. ·
Fade. The menu "fades" in, from light to dark.

This option is available only in Word 2002.

Make your selection, then click on the Close button.

Fixing Word

Word 2000 and Word 2002 include the ability to "fix" themselves. This means that you can instruct the program to examine all its components and reload them from the original installation CD-ROMs. In order to start this process in Word, follow these steps:

1. Choose Macro from the Tools menu, and then choose Macros from the resulting submenu. Word displays the Macros dialog box.
2. Using the Macros In drop-down list, choose Word Commands.
3. In the list of Word commands, select the FixMe option.
4. Click on Run

This starts the process. You may be prompted by the program to shut certain documents or programs in order for the fixing to finish. Follow the instructions, as prompted

Planting the Clipboard Toolbar

Word 2000 introduced a new feature called the Clipboard toolbar. In reality, this tool is not specific to Word, nor is it a true toolbar. The Clipboard toolbar presents up to 12 items that were recently copied to the Clipboard. You can pick and choose which of these you want to paste at any given time. It works across Office applications

The Clipboard toolbar is not a true toolbar because it doesn't work the same as other toolbars. You can dock a normal toolbar someplace along a window border in Word, and the program remembers from one session to another exactly where you want the toolbar displayed. The Clipboard toolbar has a mind of its own, and pops up whenever it wants to. It always pops up as a floating toolbar, and always seems to be in the way. This can be very annoying.

There are a couple of ways around this problem. The first is to not wait for the Clipboard toolbar to decide to display itself. Instead, choose Toolbars from the View menu, and then choose Clipboard. The Clipboard toolbar appears, and you can dock it to whatever position you want on your window. The toolbar will then stay in that position for the remainder of your Word session. You will, however, need to go through the same steps the next time you use Word--you can't get around Word's lack of memory in relation to your placement of the toolbar.

The other option is to simply turn off the toolbar so that the Clipboard toolbar never automatically shows up again. In other words, only you can manually display the toolbar--it won't just pop up on its own. This is done by making a change to a Registry value. If you decide to pursue this route, the normal cautions apply--you must be careful when editing the Registry. If you mess up, you can really mess up your system, perhaps even making it unbootable. If you feel cautiously adventurous, you can follow these steps:

1. Close Word. You don't need it open to perform any of these steps.
2. Click on the Start button. Windows displays the Start menu.
3. Choose Run from the Start menu. Windows displays the Run dialog box.
4. In the Open field, enter the name regedit.
5. Click on OK. The regedit (Registry Editor) program is started.
6. You want to find and select the HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Software\ Microsoft\ Office\9. 0\Common\ General key.
7. Choose New from the Edit menu, and then DWORD Value from the resulting submenu. The Registry Editor adds New Value #1 at the bottom of the values shown in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
8. Change the name of the new value to AcbControl, and make sure it is selected.

9. The default value of AcbControl should be 0. With this value, the Clipboard toolbar is triggered and displayed as normal. To change the value, choose Modify from the Edit menu. Registry Editor displays the Edit DWORD Value dialog box.

10. Change the value to 1 and click on OK. This value turns off the triggering mechanism used to display the Clipboard toolbar automatically.
11. Close the Registry Editor.

A signature update to Symantec's anti-virus software crippled thousands of Chinese PCs Friday when the security software took two critical Windows .dll files for malware. According to numerous blog entries from Chinese computer users, a virus signature database seeded yesterday mistook two system files of a Chinese edition of Windows XP SP2 as a Trojan horse which Symantec dubs "Backdoor.Haxdoor." via Computerworld

Microsoft Testing Multiple Searches on One Page

It seems Google isn’t the only one that has decided to redirect a handful of users to test a different approach to web search. Microsoft is redirecting a small number of random users who use Windows Live Search to search.imagine- live.com, a search engine that puts results from a number of Live searches on a single page.

When searching for something, the user will be shown the typical results from the web as well as image results, maps results, news results, links to movie listings, weather, and so on. Hitting “view more results” or “explore more” will take the user to the corresponding search engine or web site. The site is obviously still in development as sometimes the search engine spits out an error about not being able to find anything.

Aero Plex Theme

This theme is inspired by the Plex theme originally seen on old beta versions of windows codename Longhorn. I didn't want to re-create the Plex theme but create a modernized version to work with Vista. I have tested the theme on both the X86 and X64 versions of Vista and currently know of no known problems with either version.

To be able to use this theme you will need a 2 things.

1. Uxtheme patch by Rafael to enable themes in Vista - http://www.anti- tgtsoft.com/ repository/ uxtheme/Windows% 20Vista/SP0/

2. Sidebar styler by Stanimir Stoyanov to be able to use sidebar theme http://www.stoyanof f.info/blog/ 2007/01/17/ windows-sidebar- styler/

Aero Unified Theme

The fact that the glass shades of the window borders and taskbar/sidebar were different always bugged me, especially since that meant that the taskbar could have plain white text while the window border needed black text with the white "blur" effect, even if you chose a dark glass color.

So... I took the style of the taskbar/sidebar glass and copied over to the window border and removed the white "blur" effect, creating a more unified Aero theme:

I've attached just the aero.msstyles file, I didn't make a custom shellstyle. The Back/Foward buttons Shown in image are from Aero X3remes RC1 I included several styles.

Additional Steps (titlebar text and glass border size):

- Go to Personalization > Window Color and Appearance
- Open Classic Appearance Properties
- Click the "Advanced" button in the lower right
- Select Active Title Bar and choose white in the drop-down box at the bottom
- Select Inactive Title Bar and choose grey in the drop-down box at the bottom
- If you would like, select Border Padding and change it from 4 to 8 for a larger glass border.

Maxclear V3 theme created by Sonicexcess

This is a 2nd follow-up to my original Aero Maxclear theme. V2 was popular in its own way but then there seemed to be a lot of copycats turning up. So for V3 I decided to do something different again and try to steer away from the copies of my original themes. But as I found this is quite hard to do with the current applications at my disposal. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of very subtle differences in V3 compared to V2. Most people will not see them at first. But then there are the obvious changes. New start menu with uniformed glass. New flat glass taskbar. New start orb and most of all the more transparent glass all around. There is also a new sidebar style to go with the theme.There is also the Metallic silver basic theme for people who cant use Aero as seen in V2.

To be able to use this theme you will need a 2 things.

For the extra transpancy effect you will also need to adjust 1 thing.

1. Right click on your desktop and click 'Personalize'
2. Open Appearance settings
3. Go to 'windows colour and appearance'
4. Click on 'Default' for your glass effect
5. Now move the slider to the far left for the clearest glass
5. Apply

NEON NEBULAR 32bit Theme

This Theme is designed Primarily for Aero Users, however it will still work for Basic Vista without transparency.

You can Choose between a STILL Start Button or one that JUMPS Up and Down when Selected
